Bought and Sold
Working on a design with my friend J. It will be a simple economic game inspired by the old trade wars from bbs days. I’ve had a lot of short starts and over-ambitious projects and need to step back, and finish some simpler ones first. I know the work I’ve done on more complicated things will still be there when I’m ready.
GamePaper kickstart
A friend of mine pointed out an interesting kickstart project:

There’s only a day left for the kickstart project so go support this guy.

ggda & SIEGE
Went to a volunteer meeting for SIEGE this past weekend. Intended to just do mindless labor to get more free time during the conference me and my friend get their early and they are discussing an internship project working on the ggda website.
Long story short I am going to be volunteering time on the Georgia Game Developer Association’s website in the near future.
Was kind of a spontaneous spur of the moment type thing but I think I will enjoy heading down this path.
Players who psychoanalyze MMOs
A while ago about 1996 a man called Richard Bartle wrote about four different types of game players. Today while roaming the internet I came upon a page about my myers-briggs personality type there was a bit about liking systems which really struck me. It was fresh in my head because it was the best way to explain to potential employeers my desire to work with them even if I was interested in the specific end result of their work.
This systems talk made me think of the explorer type and richard bartles article and I wondered about
A) mapping the Myers briggs types to the Richard Bartles player types and
B) if any myers briggs types didn’t fit if there were new categories of game players that were left out.
What do you think? What is your Myer’s Briggs type? How do you fall in Richard Bartle’s System?
I am INTP(though i border T/F) and mostly an explorer
Update: found an online richard bartle gamer type quizz here and here are my results

Still alive
Work has consumed me a little bit past few days, but its good to have work again. I have been looking at overlord to see if I want to borrow anything from it as far as control schemes are anything. The story behind it is much more entertaining then I expected it to be. I think I need to scrap my minions in my first person RTS project and start again…too many issues with movement, attacking and what not entwined together. But that’s the point of prototyping right? see what works and throw away what doesn’t. I just have trouble with that letting go part.
First Person RTS redux
So I’ve been messing around in the little bits of free time I have recently working a little on the idea I posted about awhile back. Here is an update of work so far. Forgive the crude models, I’m not an artist.
Event Sync ready
The Event sync application is finally to a usable state. Unfortunately it still has some minor issues when goDaddy’s service hiccups but there is nothing I can do about that.
You can find it here:

First Person RTS
Player directly controls 1 elite type unit, anything else is only indirect control.
Player can take 5 different types of actions
1. move
2. attack
3. build
4. order
5. use buildings
So where do the other units come in? That would be using a building produces units.
For the bare bones version you have 4 different types of object
1. Leader unit tougher and stronger then others
2. Minion unit weak, expendable
3. Resource gathering building
4. Unit production building.
Minions would be able to do most of the things the leader can except order but do nothing unless told to do so. They can however be told to repeat tasks(like using the resource building repeatedly to get resources).
first draft of cost/stat structure for example purposes
Leader:
5 damage
25 health
Minion:
1 damage
5 health
1 resource to recruit
Recruiting Building
75 health
50 resource to build
Resource Gathering Building
1 resource per
25 resource to build
30 health
Standard victory, rout (so you could have posthumous victories.)
** I know the specific numbers probably need some work but they are there to show relative values.
Event Sync nearly there
So everything is fine except one thing. The Time. When the event gets sent to Google Calendar it is exactly three hours ahead. I think this may have to do with the fact that Palo Alto, where facebook is located, is three hours off from my time zone. Will have to get someone in a different time zone to test this.
